Why do we celebrate Christmas?

For Christians, Christmas is about the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ; however many who aren't Christians or indeed who are non-believers celebrate Christmas every year, but why?

If Christmas is supposed to be about the celebration of the birth of Jesus, then why, today is it about so much more than that? Why do we associate Christmas with presents, time off work, too much food or family gatherings? Some people believe that the idea of Christmas has been destroyed, and that it’s all about presents and what's on the TV, or how much we can eat.

If Christmas is a practice which comes along in the Christian faith as something they celebrate every year, then how has it come about that nearly everyone in the world celebrates it? We know for a fact that not everyone in the world is a Christian.

I believe that the idea of Christmas did start out this way, and that for Christians, and in the beginning, Christmas was about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. But today, for non-believers and indeed those who are not Christian, Christmas is about celebrating their own special occasion or their own new things. I believe that Christmas is a time for giving, a time to be with one's family.

The 'thing' to do at Christmas time is to be festive, happy, see relatives and eat vast amounts of food. But this is again, just like a celebration of it's own for everyone different. Each year, for one day, we all celebrate the coming together of our family's and being with our loved ones. We give presents as offerings of our good grace, and we eat festively to celebrate all the good things that we have in our lives.

My point being that I don't see why people should be upset because different people celebrate Christmas in another way to them; celebrate Christmas how you want. The next time you hear someone say "It's a shame that the idea Christmas is completely warped these days, it's all bout what presents you can have when it's supposed to be about the celebration of Jesus Christ" remember that it's their view of what they think Christmas should be, not what it actually is that they think has changed.
